Police say some people died when a garbage truck crashed into a group of pedestrians in the city centre of Glasgow in Scotland.

Police said the incident Monday led to "a number of casualties and fatalities," but couldn't give more precise details.

They said there was no indication that the crash, near George Square in the central part of the city, was a terrorist incident.

Onlookers suggested the driver became ill, but this has not been confirmed by officials.

Roads surrounding the site have been closed.

Police were not immediately able to give further details about the situation. At least six ambulances were on the scene and dozens of police and fire vehicles responded.

Scottish Labour Party leader Jim Murphy called it a "major incident" in a tweet and said his thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been injured.

The city centre was thronged with Christmas shoppers at the time of the incident. The truck hit the side of the Millennium Hotel.
