A couple accused of hiding a boy, 13, behind a false wall in their home south of Atlanta, Ga., were denied bail Sunday after being charged with child cruelty and false imprisonment.
Jean and Samantha Joy Davis made their first court appearance at the Clayton County jail on Sunday, WXIA-TV reported.
They were arrested Saturday when police found the boy after he used a cellphone to send his mother a text message.
Police said the mother told them she reported her son missing to child welfare officials four years ago when the boy's father wouldn't return him after a visit.
Police say they're trying to determine who had legal custody.
A judge scheduled a Dec. 9 preliminary hearing for the father and woman charged with hiding the boy.
Police said Sunday that three juveniles also in the home were facing obstruction charges.
The teen was apparently able to get to a phone recently and contacted his mother with his whereabouts, authorities said.
Clayton County police went to the home on Friday to look for the 13-year-old but Jean and Davis said they had no information about the boy, Sgt. Kevin Hughes said.
Several hours later, police came back and again searched the residence. While the police were in the home, the boy called his mother, who relayed to officers where her son was hidden in the house, Hughes said.
"They discovered him hidden behind a false wall in the interior portion of the home," he said.
The boy appeared to be in good physical health. He was reunited with his mother, who had come to Georgia from out of state, Hughes said.
