Judge Thokozile Masipa will begin to read her verdict in court in Pretoria, a process that could take hours, or even into Friday, given the volume of evidence presented at the trial.

The athlete nicknamed the "Blade Runner" was indicted on premeditated murder charges in connection with the Valentine's Day 2013 shooting death of his 29-year-old girlfriend.

Just under 40 witnesses were called during the trial. Pistorius could also face considerable prison time if the judge instead finds him guilty of murder without premeditation, or culpable homicide.

The 27-year-old Pistorius, who also faces three charges relating to the use of guns and ammunition, has the right to appeal any verdict.

The shocking killing came just five months after Pistorius was hailed at the 2012 London Games, becoming the first double amputee to compete in athletics at a Summer Olympics.

Both of Pistorius's legs were amputated below the knee when he was just under a year old. He would go on to win six Paralympic gold medals and eight medals overall in races between 100 and 400 metres, beginning with the 2004 Athens Games.

Pistorius was not wearing his prosthetic legs when he fired through a bathroom door in the early hours of Feb. 14, 2013, killing Steenkamp, a model who studied law in university.

Pistorius testified that soon after awaking, he believed an intruder was in the bathroom, while the prosecution alleges the shooting came after an argument between the couple.
