In what it describes as an unprecedented move, the Ontario Provincial Police Association has launched an attack ad campaign against Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak.

The OPPA, the union that represents 6,000 uniformed officers and nearly 3,000 civilian members, began airing two 15-second ads Monday. The ads end with the words "We're here for you. Who's Tim Hudak here for?"

Hudak promised early on in the election campaign that he would eliminate 100,000 public-sector jobs if he won the election.

Hudak said on May 9 that services he described as

Neither the OPPA ads nor its president, Jim Christie, specifically mention job cuts. Instead they focus on collective bargaining rights, arbitration, pensions and wage freezes, "among others issues, are unacceptable to our members," Christie said in a media release.

"For the first time in the 60-year history of the OPPA, Tim Hudak has given us no choice but to engage in a publicity campaign during an election," Christie said.

Hudak seemed unfazed by the ads Wednesday.

"I think our police officers do an outstanding job and I respect the work they do, there's no other profession like it," Hudak said at an appearance in Toronto. "But if you're asking me, am I going to give exemptions to anybody from our wage freeze, the answer is no."

Christie claims the ads are anti-Hudak and do not serve as an endorsement for the Liberals or the NDP.

"This also does not mean that we don't respect and work well with many in the Conservative caucus. We just don't want this Conservative as Premier," Christie said.

The ads are to air across Ontario and will continue airing in some markets until June 10. It's not clear how much the OPPA spent on producing the ads or how much air time it has purchased.

A call and email to the union's spokesperson, Justin Jutras, weren't immediately returned.
