Man who caused crash that killed 4 teens in 2011 gets full parole

The man convicted in the 2011 deaths of four high school football players in a car crash near Grande Prairie, Alta., has been granted full parole.

Brendan Holubowich was sentenced to three years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to four counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of dangerous driving causing injury.

In court in 2013, Holubowich admitted to causing the crash between his pickup truck and a car carrying five members of the Grande Prairie Composite High School Warriors football team. At the time of the crash, he was driving 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Vincent Stover, 16, Walter Borden-Wilkins, 15, Tanner Hildebrand, 15, and Matthew Deller, 16, all died in the crash, while Zachary Judd spent weeks in a coma, eventually recovering from brain injuries and a fractured skull.

Holubowich originally faced 16 charges, including impaired driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

At the time of his sentencing, the families of the teenagers left the courthouse angry that the judge didn't impose a stiffer sentence.

Holubowich was granted day parole last fall. Full parole becomes effective June 15.

Grande Prairie is 460 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
