The Los Angeles Kings have won their second Stanley Cup in three seasons after a 3-2 double overtime victory Friday over the New York Rangers.
Alec Martinez scored in the second session for Los Angeles after teammate Marian Gaborik set up the extra session with a goal with 12:04 left in the third.
The first overtime session was thrilling, with Ryan McDonagh hitting the post for the Rangers and Kings forward Tyler Toffoli hitting the crossbar. In the final minute, Chris Kreider missed a breakaway opportunity.
Kreider and Brian Boyle had scored just under four minutes apart late in the second period to the put the Rangers ahead 2-1 after Justin Williams opened the scoring for Los Angeles early in the first.
Los Angeles played 26 games to realize their dream, needing seven games in each of their three Western Conference series, including a comeback from 3-0 down in the first round against San Jose.
Their final series included three overtime victories, two of them in double overtime.
