Tear gas was fired near Government House in the centre of the Thai capital, Bangkok, on Tuesday as riot police launched an operation to clear demonstrators campaigning to oust Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, a Reuters witness said.

Live television pictures showed clouds of teargas and police crouching behind shields as officers clashed with protesters near the government's headquarters.
