A major ice storm has hit Toronto, crippling transit and knocking out power around the city overnight and into Sunday morning. More freezing rain is forecast for today.

There are more than 250,000 people currently without power. If power is out, Toronto Hydro says, plan for long outages, as there is a wait of 72 hours before workers can restore it.

The TTC has suspended all streetcars due to ice on overhead wires. Shuttle buses are operational, with more being added. Trains are currently bypassing Rosedale Station and major delays are being reported around the system.

Pearson Airport reports more than 50 flight cancellations.

Environment Canada is reporting more freezing rain is expected to continue into early this evening, causing downed power lines and trees and branches.

Driving conditions on untreated roads are very hazardous as well.
