The NDP have picked their candidate for the coming federal byelection in Toronto Centre.

Linda McQuaig, an author and former broadcast journalist, won the nomination on the first ballot on Sunday afternoon.

She beat out digital expert Jennifer Hollett and Susan Gapka, a singer and activist.

Meanwhile, voting is underway for a Liberal candidate.

Todd Ross, Diana Burke and Chrystia Freeland made their final pitches to Liberal members at a nomination meeting today before they started casting ballots.

Ross, a community organizer, and Burke, a former banker, are emphasizing their strong local ties. Freeland, a well-known former journalist and author who's new to the riding, says she's ready to roll up her sleeves and help the party form a compelling vision of Canada.
