One man is dead after an RCMP officer fatally shot him last night near Pigeon Lake’s Ma-Me-O Beach, about 100 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
According to a release this morning by the RCMP, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when the officer from the Wetaskiwin detachment pulled over a vehicle to conduct an impaired driving investigation.
Following an altercation, the officer drew his sidearm and shot two men. A 30-year-old man was fatally hit and a 41-year-old man was sent to Edmonton’s Royal Alexandra Hospital. He is currently in stable condition.
Both men are from Pigeon Lake.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team – and independent body that investigate incidents involving serious injury or death that may relate to the actions of a police officer – has been called in to investigate.
This is the third time ASIRT has been called upon to investigate officer-related incidents this week in Alberta.
On Friday night an RCMP officer in Leduc tasered a man during an arrest. That man was sent to hospital where he is now in critical condition.
On Thursday, an RCMP officer in Grande Cache shot a man during a traffic altercation.
ASIRT will hold a news conference at 1:00 p.m. local time today to update on the status of all three investigations.
